Stride Toward the Future Together: Asian College Students Short Video Exchange Exhibition

April 14
00:01 2023

The year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Japan, and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. At this time point, it is of commemorative significance to carry out cultural exchanges between college students in China, Japan, South Korea, and other Asian regions. As one of the important overseas exchange activities of the Information Office of Jilin Provincial People’s Government P.R.C in 2022, the exhibition focused on short videos, a common interest among university students. The contest and the symposium attracted attention, enhanced communication, and strengthened trust between university students in Asia. Using new media as a bridge and short videos as the medium, we can subtly change Asia’s perception of China.

The submission for the exhibition officially kicked off on September 20th, 2022, receiving positive feedback from nearly a hundred domestic and overseas universities. This exchange exhibition featured 640 films, including 147 animations, 130 micro short videos, 169 micro short documentaries, 72 public service advertisements, 51 vlogs, and 71 other video formats.

The submissions came from 108 institutions. Categorized by country, the submissions originated from 20 different countries (and/or regions) and 89 domestic institutions. These entries were submitted from 12 universities in Eastern China, 14 universities in Southern China, 5 universities in Western China, 46 universities in Northern China, 12 universities in Central China, and 19 universities in other countries (and/or regions). Some of the institutions included the University of Macau, Taiwan University of Arts, Hong Kong Design Institute, Chung-Ang University, the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television, Zhejiang Normal University (international students), Beijing Film Academy, Communication University of China, Northeast Normal University, Jilin University of Arts, Liaoning University, Zhejiang University of Communication, Nanjing University of Arts, Anhui University of Arts, Beijing Union University, Capital Normal University, and many other well-known universities at home and abroad.

Two Rising Star Awards, three Excellent Audio Visual Creative Awards, two Excellent Audio Visual Technical Awards, seven Excellent Cultural Communication Awards, and 15 Excellent Audio Visual Awards were issued during the exhibition. Additionally, 20 Excellent Instructor Awards and 20 Excellent Organization Awards were also issued.

The exhibition’s evaluation process was strictly in accordance with the standards and rules for the Review of Online Short Video Content (2021) of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and Jilin Animation Institute’s Rules for the Initial Evaluation of the Asian College Students Short Video Exchange Exhibition. After evaluating over 100 short films produced by students from different schools in various regions, the final evaluation committee concluded that each submission maintained a high level of quality and artistry in terms of technical standards, themes, and artistic techniques.

The exhibition aimed to use film to describe the changes in the creators’ cities and to record the imprint of time from their perspectives. The exhibition also sought to establish iconic characters that conveyed healthy lifestyles, mentalities, and trends for college students, and to promote friendship between domestic and overseas universities. These exchanges birthed a creation and communication platform for young filmmakers.

In sum, the exhibition used new media as a bridge and short videos as a medium to provide Asian college students with a free space to self-express. This event also promoted cultural exchanges and communication between Chinese and overseas university students, creating a healthy cultural environment for future cooperation among Asian countries and regions.
